Practice: even the most ad-lib or impromptu speeches have been well rehearsed, that is why they look so easy. In front of the mirror can work. It is best to keep the shuffling of cue cards and paper to a minimum. It is not necessary to commit the whole speech to memory but the more you can alleviate the reliance on paper the better. If you can get into the room before the ceremony kicks off, all the better. Try to practice with the microphone.

Slow down and breathe: you maybe a bit nervous at the outset (that will quickly go) so slow down and let the crowd soak up the atmosphere there is a very good chance that most will have had more than a few drinks by the time it comes to your speech

Body Language: always stand up straight and appear confident with a little smirk. Move your head around the room to show that you are speaking among friends.

Nerves: even if you are nervous, don't ever start the speech with something like 'bear with me as I have never spoke in public before and am very nervous' this immediately sets off a weird vibe in the room

Audience: note at the wedding, the crowd are really on your side. You are not delivering any bad news, bad company results or eulogizing at a funeral .

Alcohol: dont be wasted before you make the speech. You really don't want to be remembered as the person who slurred out the non-sensical wedding speech.

Structure: do structure your speech as this avoids rambing, you dont have to cover every topic but have some semblance of a beginning and an end.
